2013The only rules for this year's journal quilt challenge are that the maker had to choose the theme for the year and produce a quilt a month measuring 12" x 8" with a landscape orientation.
My subject for this challenge is My Garden - I have taken hundreds of photographs over the years with the intention of interpreting some of them in stitch, perhaps combined with drawing and digital manipulation. I have chosen to use pots as the constant element in each quilt. For the first four, manipulated photographic images were printed onto cotton and silk organza, layered and quilted, sometimes with minimal stitching so that the underlying image was not obliterated. With the next four quilts, the pots really take centre stage. I liked the shape of one particular pot and decided to use it in a variety of ways. I cut out stencils and created the images with paintsticks and Inktense blocks . The first pot quilt has minimal quilting, just following the outlines, but the others have been quilted more heavily. I was unable to complete the challenge so there are only eight quilts this year. I will do better in 2014! |
